# Calculation of audio and video file size (un-compressed)

The movie or drama, what we watched in computer or television is the combination of video and audio files. Commonly we are familiar with these video file of various format like .mp4, .mkv, .flv, .wmv, .3gp etc. These all video files are compressed and encoded in a specific format. But before compression, all the video files are in raw state.

Here is the simple calculation of this raw video file. Have a look on it.

## Bit depth

Bit depth is the number of bits per pixel which is referred to color depth or pixel depth on a video.

The better video color quality is depending on the more bits per pixel.

1-bit (21 or 2 colors) – Monochrome displays.

2-bit (22 or 4 colors) – CGA displays.

4-bit (24 or 16 colors) – EGA displays.

8-bit (28 or 256 colors) – VGA displays.

16-bit (216 or 65,536 colors) – XGA displays.

24-bit (224 or 16,777,216 colors) – SVGA displays.

32-bit (16,777,216 colors + Alpha channel (232 or 4,294,967,296 color combinations))

48-bit (248 or 281,474,976,710,656 colors)

## Resolution

The resolution is simple mathematical equation of horizontal and vertical row in a screen or the total number of pixel.

File size of audio and video in a second = [(Image size * frame rate) in a second] + Audio in a second

 Image file size = (Resolution x Bit depth)/ (8 x 1024 x 1024) MB = 9 MB If, Resolution = 2048×1536 Bit-depth = 24 bit color

 Audio file size in a second = ( Sample rate x Bit-depth x channel number x duration in second ) / (8 x 1024 x 1024) MB = (44100 x 16 x 2 x 1)/ (8 x 1024 x 1024) MB = 0.17 MB If, Sample rate = 44100 Hz Bit-depth = 16 bit Channel number = 2 Duration = 1 sec

Video file size in a second

= Image size * frame rate

= 9 MB x 25

= 225 MB

File size of audio and video in a second

= Video file size in a second + Audio file size in a second

= 225 MB + 0.17 MB

= 225.17 MB
